On June 19, senior research analyst Ben Mohr, CFA‘s recent Chart of the Week, “Are Americans Swimming in Debt Again?” was featured on MarketWatch, a financial information website and a subsidiary of Dow Jones & Company that provides business news, analysis, and stock market data.
The article expands on Ben’s analysis of U.S. consumer debt, including additional charts to explain some of the mitigating factors to rising consumer debt. The U.S. GDP still demonstrates that the economy is in far better shape than it was during the 2008 financial crisis and defaults on debt are tame, according to Ben, and still trending toward near historic lows.
“That said, if the economy does begin to contract into recession as some economists fear, the debt load could be a more pressing matter. ‘We are starting to see some chinks in the armor,’ Mohr said.”
